Follow the Spanish red wine Sangria recipe for a hot weather treat.

This sangria recipe takes 5 to 10 minutes to make. Make sure you have a pitcher large enough to hold one bottle of wine plus all of the fruit you add. Usually a one liter pitcher is large enough. You can also serve this sangria recipe in a punch bowl (with a wooden serving spoon).

Modify the Sangria recipe to use white wine.

Prepare this sangria recipe in the morning if possible so the sangria has several hours to absorb the fruit juices into the wine. Allow the pitcher to cool in the fridge for several hours before serving.

Sangria Recipe - Ingredients

· 1 bottle of red wine
· 1 table spoon Sugar
· 1 liter Club Soda, or other Lemon-lime soda
15-25 Slices or cubes of apples, oranges, lemons, peaches, pineapple, or grapes.

Sangria Recipe - Instructions

Combine wine, sugar and fruit. Refrigerate for 8 or more hours. Do not add the club soda until ready to serve. While less traditional, a white wine can be substituted for red.

Experiment with different fruits, wines, and spirits to find your favorite taste. Avoid oak tasting wines in sangria. Wines that offer fresh fruit, crisp acids and nice floral notes are preferred. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Rioja reds, Zinfandel, and Shiraz work well.

Sangria History

Sangria originated in Spain but is also popular in Mexico. It is served frequently in the summer months, and year round in the south of Spain. Recipes vary widely. In bars and restaurants, it is served in small pitchers. At parties, it is often served in a punch bowl with a wooden serving spoon.
