Swan Creek AVA occupies about 100 thousand acres (approximately 40 thousand hectares) in northwestern North Carolina. This AVA is sheltered by local mountain ranges. Its soil is loose and relatively heavy in schist due to the mountains. Popular grape varieties include Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Viognier, Pinot Gris, and Riesling.

Yadkin Valley
Yadkin Valley AVA occupies about 1.4 million acres (approximately 560 thousand hectares) in northwestern North Carolina. Its free-draining soils are based on clay and loam and the winters are mild. sandy and gravelly and the climate is mild and arid. Popular grape varieties include Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Riesling, and Chardonnay.
