Haut-Medoc
The Haut-Medoc AOC is the southern section of the Medoc which runs along the western bank of the Gironde estaury in a 50 mile (80 kilometer) strip from the city of Bordeaux to the Atlantic. This is fine wine country, arguably the locale with the highest number of fine wines per acre anywhere on earth. The generic Haut-Medoc AOC might not be special. But wines from the villages of Margaux, St.-Julien, Pauillac, and St.-Estephe often are. As are their lesser-known cousins from Listrac and Moulis. These reds may be cellared for 5 to 8 years and the crus classés may be cellared for 6 to 15 years.
