Only California Is Elsewhere...The American wine classification system was established in 1980. This is a geographical system and does not specify grape varieties, permitted wine styles, or other such information. Does this mean that it won't help you when choosing a wine? I don't think so. And neither do wine producers who make the effort to get new areas defined. Can we say that Napa Valley AVA is better than ...? Quite often.
